Hydrofoil & Wingfoil School

The latest activity on Amami Oshima is hydrofoil surfing.

What is hydrofoil surfing?

Foil surfing is an exciting water sport. In this sport, you glide on a board equipped with a special foil, riding on small waves or wind. The following explains the basic elements of foil surfing.

  1. フォイルボード :
    • The boards used for foil surfing are different from regular surfboards. Foil boards are fitted with special fins called foils that float in the water. These foils allow the board to lift off the surface of the water and glide through it.
  2. Foil :
    • A foil is a wing-shaped component attached to the underside of a surfboard that generates buoyancy in the water. A foil consists of a main wing located at the front and a stabilizer located at the rear. The main wing generates lift in the water, causing the board to float. The stabilizer provides stability and maintains balance.
  3. gliding :
    • In foil surfing, the board lifts off the water's surface, and the foil generates lift in the water, allowing the rider to glide. During this glide, the rider stands on the board and adjusts their weight balance to control direction.
  4. Utilization of waves and wind :
    • Foil surfing allows you to glide using waves or wind. When using wave energy to glide, you move forward on the wave and slide down its slope to lift the foil. When using wind, you catch the wind to lift the foil and use the wind's power to glide.
  5. Challenges and Technology :
    • Foil surfing is a sport that requires balance and control. By manipulating the foil and adjusting your weight balance, you control the direction and height of your glide. Riders of all levels, from beginners to advanced, can enjoy it, but if you're trying it for the first time, it's important to get guidance from an experienced instructor.

Foil surfing is a fantastic sport that allows you to feel connected to nature while having a thrilling experience.

Anyone can get started. You'll float on the water while being towed by a jet ski. It's a large board, so it's easier than wakeboarding. Beginner's lesson: Flying on the water while being towed by a jet ski.

Towing Foil video: KAZBO's exclusive rider, Kapono Fukuda (then 15 years old), riding a big swell on the outer shore of Chiba's Daito Beach via foil towing. The video was provided by Ted Surf Owner, the Japanese sponsor of Armstrong Foil, who towed the foil.

I'm also interested in hydrofoils, but I'd really like to ride on the wind.

What is a wing foil?

This is a new water sport that combines elements of windsurfing and kitesurfing. In this sport, you control a wing held in your hand towards the wind and propel yourself forward using a foil attached to a special board (foilboard) that glides across the water's surface. The basic elements of wingfoil are explained below.

  1. Wing :
    • Wings are devices used to catch wind and propel the bike forward, and are usually held in the hand. Wings consist of a wind-catching surface (usually made of nylon) stretched over the frame. Wings come in various shapes and sizes, and are chosen to suit the rider's physique and wind conditions.
  2. フォイルボード :
    • The boards used for wing foiling are different from regular surfboards. Foil boards have a foil attached that generates buoyancy in the water. The foil creates buoyancy in the water, causing the board to float. Foil boards typically have a platform for standing on.
  3. Method of operation :
    • In wingfoils, the wing is manipulated towards the wind to lift the foil and glide. Pulling the wing upwards lifts the foil, while pushing it downwards pushes it underwater. By manipulating the wing, you can control the direction and speed while gliding.
  4. Use of wind :
    • Wingfoils utilize wind for propulsion, so wind conditions are crucial. The gliding experience and speed vary depending on the wind's strength and direction. You can enjoy gliding even in relatively light winds, but stronger winds allow for higher speeds.
  5. How to enjoy :
    • Wingfoiling offers a fun experience of gliding smoothly across the water's surface while feeling connected to nature. It can be enjoyed by people of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders, and can be enjoyed in various bodies of water, including the sea, lakes, and rivers.

Wingfoiling is a fantastic sport that uses wind and water to provide a thrilling experience. If you're trying it for the first time, it's important to get guidance from an experienced instructor.
